Protecting special Places

Linking neighborhoods and preserving quality of life.

Conservation land trusts, like South Portland Land Trust, protect the special places in our landscape that offer public benefit - urban park space for gathering with your family, natural marshes for wildlife protection, and land that links links neighborhoods with shady trails. To help this happen, we take on many roles:

We LOOK OUT FOR Our Shared FUTURE

The land trust catalogues potential open space properties and proactively works with the city and the development community to plan for open space, so that the right land is conserved at the right time. Our intention is to ensure that critical open spaces are preserved and parks and trails are enhanced to optimize benefits for all users.

We create trail space and parks

A primary objective of the trust is to link together all 15 South Portland neighborhoods, and provide connections to the Cape Elizabeth, Portland, and Eastern Trail systems.

We Steward the Land

It's important that land is maintained so it can be enjoyed, so we work with community members to ensure our trails and parks stay viable and beautiful.

We offer expertise

We work with community members, offering expertise and conservation options for landowners. Understanding the goals of the property owner, we assess land for conservation value and assist in making the best decision, which may be an easement, a donation, or sale of the land.

We Educate Citizens

We offer programs like "Get to Know Your Trails" to educate individuals on the benefits of preserving and using natural settings well.

We Make Life Better in the City

South Portland Land Trust is a leader in the city in enhancing quality of life. We donate funds to build playgrounds. We offer scholarships to students who demonstrate dedication to outdoor leadership, education, and conservation. We help individuals memorialize loved ones. And more.
